Fight the Flu... On a Budget!

The beauty of the winter season is in full swing. However, the winter season also brings with it the flu season. The flu has already taken its toll on many Massachusetts residents. While it's very important to take all possible precautions to stay healthy and prevent the flu (or any other illness) during this season, it can be a very expensive endeavor. Never fear! Savvy Student is here to help with an abundance of tips for fighting the flu without breaking the bank!

Get a flu shot!
To a college student, a flu shot may seem to be an unnecessary option because of the cost. However, the Health Center at Brandeis is currently offering flu shots for the low, low price of $20. Even if you have never had the flu before, it only takes one measly little germ to get you sick!
NOTE: The vaccine prevents the three most severe and common strains of the flu that are prevalent this year. It is possible to get another strain of the flu despite taking the vaccine, but it would be much less likely and the strain would not be as severe.

Keep your hands clean!
Keeping your hands germ free will help to prevent any sickness during the flu season! Wash your hands with soap and water. If you don't have an opportunity to wash your hands, use hand sanitizer. Walgreens and CVS both have many types of hand sanitizers and antibacterial wipes for affordable prices. Walgreens offers a pack of 40 antibacterial wipes for only $2.99.
NOTE: According to the CDC, it is important to avoid touching your eyes, ears, and nose and to clean surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs.

Take care of your body!
Sleep, eating healthy, and drinking plenty of water can be the most important aspects of staying healthy. Sleep and water are free so be sure to sleep and drink to your heart's content! Ensuring that you maintain a healthy lifestyle can be a key component in staying healthy. Never underestimate the power of a good night's sleep, an abundance of fruit, vitamin C, and other healthy foods, and water!

Don't spread germs!
Obvious actions such as covering your mouth when you cough, covering your nose when you sneeze, and taking any other precaution necessary to prevent spreading your germs to others can help to ensure that sickness is not spread to others. Even if you are not sick, your germs may cause another person to fall ill with a sickness that your body was able to fight off!

While a lot of these precautions may seem obvious or of little importance, these four simple, cheap, and effective tips can be the difference between a healthy, productive winter season and a month of chills, sneezes, aches, and pains. Don't wait until you catch the flu to start fighting it. Be proactive... and do it on a budget!

Stay healthy!
