We here at Savvy Student know how to do romance the right way: the affordable way. We've compiled a list of inexpensive, special gifts that will help you achieve a meaningful holiday for you and your Valentine!
Wondering which ideas are more romantic? We asked students their thoughts on the gifts below and gave each potential present a point value. Check out how many "points" you can earn for each of the ideas below. Our rating scale goes from 1 to 10: 1 being "'Die Hard' is more romantic than you" and 10 being "This is 'The Notebook'- level romance."
1) Homemade Dinner: 8
Going out to a restaurant can be a great time; you and your date can get dressed up, get 3 delicious courses, and have the satisfaction of going out in public on date. However, this is a really unnecessary and expensive Valentine's routine... a homemade meal, if cooked properly, can cost little more than $15, but be transformed into a truly memorable, meaningful meal. Cook your date's favorite food by hand (or get help from a friend, for those of you who aren't kitchen-savvy) and present it at your house or a favorite hang-out. A nice table for two, with candles ($1 tea lights are available at Walgreens) sets the mood, and the effort you invest in making their favorite meal, plus their favorite dessert (chocolate is big with the girls, boys!), really sets this Valentine's date apart from going to a crowded, loud, and expensive restaurant. In many cases, a night at home is much more romantic than heading downtown.
2) Jewelry: 10
Getting a girlfriend one special item for Valentine's Day is often the best investment you can make! Jewelry requires a bit of money ($35 is decent), but it is much cheaper than buying the dinner, the roses, the chocolates... etc. A classic pearl necklace or a silver pendant can really be a sweet gesture that says "you're important to me" to your significant other, especially if this item has a personal touch (for example, it's their favorite color gem or favorite animal pendant). It shows that you've put some thought into this gift.
3) Do-It-Yourself: 10
If you are particularly artistic or crafty, consider creating something really beautiful and special for your date to present on Valentine's Day: a well-written poem or song, as well as a bit of artwork, can go a REALLY long way in someone's heart. Note: you can be rated a 1-5 if the poem is cheesy or the song is bad... make sure you have a friend take a look or listen before Valentine's Day.
