Take Advantage of Free Tax Prep: VITA at Bentley

Bentley University, another institution based in Waltham, MA, will be celebrating its 15th consecutive year of the VITA Program. What is VITA, you may ask? Voluntary Income Tax Assistance! Bentley hires its most qualified financial accounting students to give FREE (yes, it's free!) assistance, advice, and instruction to taxpayers who make a gross income of $50,000 or less a year. This would include most Brandeis Undergraduates, of course, and so we at Savvy Student are highly encouraging 'Deisians to take advantage of this incredible, free service.

Tax forms, aside from looking formidably complicated, are very precise, detailed, and therefore, confusing. However, you can save a lot of money by learning to prepare your tax return documents by yourself. H&R Block offers a free online service, as well, but there are fees associated should you need the help of a live person, either over the phone or in-person. The basic program costs $19.95, and comparing this to a $29.99 computer software from TurboTax, we can see that the process of getting help for filing tax returns can be quite expensive.

Instead, to be a smart saver, we reccommend to all 'Deisians with taxes to be filed to take them on over to Bentley, where you can get in-person assistance and explanations for all of the data fields and papers. Bentley's VITA service gives you a real understanding of what a Tax Return is and how to file it properly, rather than having some expensive software do it for you. When it comes to your money, it is essential that you know where it came from and where it's going!

Check out Bentley's description of the VITA program, as well as getting in touch with the contact-person for Bentley's Service-Learning Center's most beneficial program! Good luck this tax season, and as always, stay savvy!
